Oil pump — removal, inspection and installation

Removal

1. Remove the timing chain cover (see Timing chain cover/oil pump housing — removal and installation …).

2. Remove the screws from the oil pumpcover-to-timing chain cover and separate the oil pump cover from the timing chain cover and disassemble the oil pump. You may need to use an impact screwdriver to loosen the pump cover screws without stripping the heads.

Inspection

3. Check the oil pump rotor-to-cover clearance, tooth tip clearance and rotor-to-body clearance (see illustrations). Compare your measurements to the values listed in this Chapter’s Specifications. Replace the pump if any of the measurements exceed the specified limits.

i.3a Use a feeler gauge and straightedge to check the clearance between the rotors and the cover

i.3b Use a feeler gauge to check the tooth-tip clearance between the inner and outer rotors

i.3c Use a feeler gauge to check the outer rotor-to-pump body clearance

4. Remove the pressure relief valve plugand extract the spring and pressure relief valve plunger from the pump housing or cover. Check the spring for distortion and the relief valve plunger for scoring. Replace parts as necessary.

5. Install the pump rotors. Pack the spacesbetween the rotors with petroleum jelly (this will prime the pump).

6. Apply thread-locking compound to thepump cover screws, install the cover and tighten the screws to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications. Install the oil pressure relief valve and spring assembly. Use a new sealing washer on the plug and tighten the plug securely.

Installation

7. Apply a thin coat of anaerobic sealantto the timing chain cover-to-block sealing surface and new 0-rings in the engine cover. Install the timing chain cover (see Timing chain cover/oil pump housing — removal and installation …) to the engine block and tighten the bolts to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications. 8 The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. Add the specified type and quantity of oil and coolant (see Tune-up and routine maintenance); run the engine and check for leaks.
