Valve cover — removal and installation

Removal

1. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery (see Engine electrical systems).

2. Remove the engine cover (see illustration).

i.2 Remove the engine cover fasteners and lift the cover off of the valve cover

3. Mark and detach any hoses or wires from the throttle body, alternator or valve cover (see illustration) that will interfere with the removal of the valve cover.

i.3 Disconnect the electrical connectors from the ignition coils, then remove the wiring harness fasteners and position the harness out of the way

4. Remove the engine oil dipstick.

5. Wipe off the valve cover thoroughly to prevent debris from falling onto the exposed cylinder head or camshaft/valve train assembly.

6. Remove the valve cover bolts, following the reverse of the tightening sequence (see illustration 4.10).

7. Carefully lift off the valve cover and gasket. If the cover is stuck to the cylinder head, tap it with a rubber mallet to break the gasket seal. Do not pry between the cover and cylinder head or you’ll damage the gasket mating surfaces.

Installation

8. Remove the old gasket and clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and the valve cover. Clean the surfaces with a rag soaked in brake system cleaner.

9. Install a new molded rubber gasket into the groove around the valve cover perimeter. Apply beads of RTV sealant where the timing chain cover meets the cylinder head.

10. Place the cover into position and tighten the bolts in the recommended sequence (see illustration) to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications.
