Exhaust manifold — removal and installation

Removal

Note: The exhaust manifold and the warm-up catalytic converter are one unit.

1. Disconnect the cable from the negativeterminal of the battery (see Engine electrical systems).

2. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands.

3. On Civic, 2014 and earlier CR-V models,remove the cowl panel (see Body).

4. Remove the lower splash shields (see illustrations Oil pan — removal and installation).

5. Disconnect the oxygen sensor electrical connectors and remove the sensors (see Emissions and engine control systems).

6. Detach the exhaust pipe from the catalytic converter/exhaust manifold. Apply penetrating oil to the fastener threads if they are difficult to remove.

7. Remove the heat shield mounting boltsand shields. Be sure to soak the bolts and nuts with penetrating oil before attempting to remove them from the manifold.

8. Remove the lower support bracketmounting bolts.

9. Remove the converter nuts and bolts anddetach the converter from the cylinder head.

Installation

10. Discard the old gaskets and use a scraper to clean the gasket mating surfaces on the exhaust manifold or catalytic converter and cylinder head, then clean the surfaces with a rag soaked in brake system cleaner.

11. Place the exhaust manifold/catalytic converter in position on the cylinder head and install the nuts and bolts. Tighten the nuts and bolts to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications.

12. Install the heat shield(s) and tighten the bolts securely.

13. Connect the exhaust pipe to the converter, using new bolts. Tighten the bolts securely.

14. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.

15. Reconnect the battery (see Engine electrical systems).

16. Start the engine and check for exhaust leaks at the cylinder head and the exhaust pipe.
