Oil pan — removal and installation

Removal

1. Drain the engine oil (see Tune-up and routine maintenance).

2. Remove the subframe (see Suspension and steering).

3. On automatic transaxles, remove thetorque converter cover bolts (see Automatic transaxle).

4. On manual transaxles, remove the bell-housing brace from the transaxle and the engine block.

5. Remove the oil pan bolts, looseningthem a little at a time in a criss-cross pattern.

6. Carefully remove the oil pan from the lower crankcase.

Caution: If the oil pan is difficult to separate from the lower crankcase, use a rubber mallet or a block of wood and a hammer to jar it loose. If that doesn’t work, an oil pan gasket cutter may be available from your local auto parts store.

Installation

7. Using a gasket scraper, thoroughly cleanall old gasket material from the lower crankcase and oil pan. Remove residue and oil film with a solvent such as acetone or lacquer thinner.

8. Apply a 2 mm bead of RTV sealant to the perimeter of the oil pan, inboard of the bolt holes.

9. Install the oil pan and bolts. Tighten thebolts a little at a time, in a criss-cross pattern beginning with the center bolts and working outward, to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications.

10. The remaining installation is the reverse of removal.

11. Change the oil filter and fill the crankcasewith the specified engine oil (see Tune-up and routine maintenance).
