Catalytic converter — replacement

Note: Because of a Federally mandated extended warranty which covers emissions-related components like the catalytic converter, check with a dealer service department before replacing the converter at your own expense.

Integral exhaust manifold/ catalytic converter assembly (Civic 1.8L MT and AT engines only)

1. Remove the upstream and downstream oxygen sensors (see Oxygen sensors — replacement).

2. Remove the exhaust manifold (see 1.8L single overhead camshaft (SOHC) engine). The catalyst is an integral part of the exhaust manifold.

3. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Under-vehicle catalytic converter (CR-V and Civic 2.4L and 1.8L CVT engines only)

4. Raise the vehicle and place it securely on jack stands.

5. Remove the upstream and downstream oxygen sensors (see Oxygen sensors — replacement).

6. Remove the spring-loaded bolts from the front mounting flange and the nuts from the rear flange and remove the catalytic converter.

7. If you’re planning to replace (rather than just remove) the catalytic converter, remove the heat shield bolts and remove the heat shield, then install the heat shield on the new unit.

8. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to replace any rusted or damaged fasteners and to tighten all fasteners securely.
