Coil spring (rear, Civic models) — removal and installation

1. Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts. Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands. Block the front wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling. Remove the wheel.

2. Place a floor jack under the trailing arm (where it meets the rear knuckle). Slowly raise the jack until the spring begins to compress (see illustration).

i.2 Raise the jack just enough to take the pressure off of the spring

3. Remove the ABS rear wheel speed sensor from the knuckle. Also unbolt the rear brake hose bracket from the knuckle (see Brakes).

4. Detach the stabilizer bar link from the trailing arm (see Stabilizer bar and bushings (rear) — removal, inspection and installation).

5. Remove the shock absorber lower mounting bolt (see Shock absorber (rear, Civic models) — removal and installation).

6. Unbolt the upper arm from the rear knuckle (see Suspension arms (rear) and rear knucle — removal and installation).

7. Unbolt the forward end of the trailing arm from the floor pan (see Suspension arms (rear) and rear knucle — removal and installation).

8. Slowly lower the jack and remove the coil spring.

9. Check the coil spring for chips or cracks in the spring coating (this will cause premature spring failure due to corrosion). Inspect the spring seat for cuts, hardness and general deterioration, replacing it if necessary.

10. Installation is the reverse of removal, noting the following points:

  1. ) Be sure to position the lower end of the coil spring in the depressed area of the trailing arm.
  2. ) Raise the outer end of the trailing arm with a floor jack to simulate normal ride height, then tighten the suspension fasteners to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications.
  3. ) Tighten the wheel and lug nuts to the torque listed in the Tune-up and routine maintenance Specifications
  4. ) Have the rear wheel alignment checked and, if necessary, adjusted.
