Interlock system — description and solenoid replacement

Warning: These models are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), more commonly known as airbags. Always disable the airbag system before working in the vicinity of any airbag system component to avoid the possibility of accidental deployment of the airbag(s), which could cause personal injury (see Chassis electrical system).

Warning: Do not use a memory saving device to preserve the PCM or radio memory when working on or near airbag system components.

Description

1. Vehicles equipped with an automatic transaxle have an interlock system to prevent unintentional shifting. The interlock system consists of two subsystems: a shift lock system and a key interlock system.

Key interlock system

2. The key interlock system prevents the ignition key from being removed from the ignition switch unless the shift lever is in the Park position.

Shift lock system

3. The shift lock system prevents the shift lever from moving from the Park position unless the brake pedal is depressed. Nor can the shift lever be shifted when the brake pedal and the accelerator pedal are depressed at the same time. In the event of a system malfunction, you can release the shift lever by inserting a screwdriver into the release slot near the shift lever (sedans/coupes) or into the slot in the upper steering column cover (CR-V).

Solenoid replacement

Note: The following procedure pertains only to the shift lock solenoid. For information on how to replace the key interlock solenoid, refer to the Ignition switch/key lock cylinder replacement Section in Chassis electrical system. The key interlock solenoid isn’t available separately.

4. Remove the center console panels. Remove the center console (see Body).

5. Disconnect the shift lock solenoid electrical connector.

6. On type A shift levers, remove the shift knob (see Shift knob — replacement) and the shifter trim panel. Depress the four locking tabs and remove the shift lock unit by pulling upward to remove and access the solenoid. Then pry the lock tabs to remove the solenoid.

7. On type B shift levers, pry the plastic lock tabs and slide the shift lock solenoid, clear the tabs and remove the solenoid (see illustration).

8. Installation is the reverse of removal. Install the plunger and plunger spring into the new shift lock solenoid.

9. Align the shift lock solenoid plunger with the tip of the shift lock stop.

10. Connect the shift lock solenoid electrical connector.

CR -V

11. Remove the shift lever assembly (see Shift lever — replacement).

12. Use a small, flat-tipped screwdriver to release the lock tab under the solenoid.

13. Pull the solenoid straight up and off the shift lock stop lever pin, then disconnect the electrical connector.

14. Transfer the plunger and plunger spring into the new shift lock solenoid.

15. Installation is the reverse of removal. Slide the lock tab in the opposite direction of removal to lock the solenoid in place.

16. Verify operation.
