Shift lever — replacement

Warning: These models are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), more commonly known as airbags. Always disable the airbag system before working in the vicinity of any airbag system component to avoid the possibility of accidental deployment of the airbag(s), which could cause personal injury (see Chassis electrical system).

Warning: Do not use a memory saving device to preserve the PCM or radio memory when working on or near airbag system components

Civic

1. Set the parking brake, then place the shift lever in the Neutral position.

2. Remove the center console panels.

Remove the center console (see Body).

3. Remove the nut that secures the shift cable end (see Shift cable — replacement and adjustment).

4. Rotate the socket holder 1/4 turn until the flattened edge of the cable grommet guide aligns with the base and slide the assembly out of the slotted recess (see illustration 3.6).

5. Disconnect the shift lock solenoid electrical connector (see illustration) and park pin electrical connector.

6. Remove the center console bracket, then remove the four bolts and remove the shift lever assembly from the floor (see illustration).

7. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, but note the following points:

  1. ) Verify the indicator for the neutral position lights with the ignition switch on.
  2. ) Adjust the shift cable, if necessary (see Shift cable — replacement and adjustment).

CR-V

8. Set the parking brake, then place the shift lever in the Reverse position.

9. Remove the center console (see Center console — removal and installation).

10. Remove the shifter trim panel from around the shift lever.

11. Remove the access panel from the left side of the shifter base.

12. Disconnect the shift knob (O/D switch) electrical connector (see Shift knob — replacement).

13. Disconnect the shift cable from the shifter assembly (see Shift cable — replacement and adjustment).

14. Disconnect the shift lever connector from under the shifter assembly.

15. Working through the access panel opening and under the shifter assembly, remove the three bolts and remove the shift lever assembly (see illustration).

16. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, but note the following points:

  1. ) Verify the indicator for the neutral position lights with the ignition switch on.
  2. ) Adjust the shift cable, if necessary (see Shift cable — replacement and adjustment).
