Transfer case (4WD CR-V models) — removal and installation

1. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands.

2. Remove the bolts and fasteners that secure the splash shield to the front bumper, front inner fender liner and body. Remove the shield.

3. Remove the bolts and fasteners from the front underfloor splash shield and remove this shield.

4. Mark the relationship of the driveshaft to the transfer case flange, then unbolt the driveshaft from the flange (see Driveshaft (4WD CR-V models) — removal and installation). Suspend the driveshaft with a piece of wire (don’t let it hang by the center support bearing).

5. Drain the transaxle lubricant (see Tune-up and routine maintenance).

6. Remove the under-vehicle catalytic converter (see Emissions and engine control systems).

7. Remove the bolts securing the transfer case to the transaxle, note the locations of the short and long bolts and carefully remove the transfer case from the transaxle. There is one dowel pin that goes on the frontmost bolt.

8. Installation is the reverse of removal, noting the following points:

  1. ) Install a new 0-ring to the case.
  2. ) Tighten the mounting bolts to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications.
  3. ) Refill the transaxle with the proper type and amount of lubricant (see Tune-up and routine maintenance).
