Powertrain Control Module (PCM) — removal and installation

1. The following procedure covers removal and installation of the SAME PCM ONLY. If the PCM must be replaced with a new one, it is recommended this be performed by a dealership service department or other qualified repair facility.

Warning: All models covered by this manual are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), more commonly known as airbags. Always disarm the airbag system before working in the vicinity of any airbag system component to avoid the possibility of accidental deployment of the airbag, which could cause personal injury (see Chassis electrical system).

Caution: To avoid electrostatic discharge damage to the PCM, handle the PCM only by its case. Do not touch the electrical terminals during removal and installation. If available, ground yourself to the vehicle with an anti-static ground strap, available at computer supply stores.

Caution: The PCM is a component of the immobilizer (vehicle security) system. If a new PCM is installed in the vehicle, the immobilizer code must be programmed into the new PCM by a dealership service department or other qualified repair facility before the engine will start. The technician will need the vehicle, the new PCM unit and all of the vehicle keys to program the new PCM unit.

Note: If the PCM is to be replaced, the data from the old PCM can be transferred to the new PCM by a dealership service department or other qualified repair facility.

2. Disconnect the battery and remove if necessary, to remove the PCM (see Engine electrical systems).

3. The PCM is located on the driver’s side of the engine compartment. If equipped, slide the cover off the PCM.

4. Remove the PCM mounting bolts.

Caution: Avoid any static electricity damage to the computer by grounding yourself to the body before touching the PCM and using a special anti-static pad to store the PCM on once it is removed.

5. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the PCM and remove the PCM (see illustration).

6. Installation is the reverse of removal.

7. Reconnect the cable to the negative battery terminal and perform the PCM idle learn procedure (see Engine electrical systems).
